Passengers on public transportation such as buses, trains, taxi’s and other Common Carriers should know that transportation companies owe their passengers the highest degree of care for their safety. This highest degree of care applies not only for the safety of the passengers while riding on a vehicle, but also for providing a safe place for passengers to “alight” or get off the vehicle. Drivers must make sure they follow all appropriate procedures and protocol in safeguarding their passengers. This includes discharging passengers only at properly designated stops which are safe, well lit and which provide adequate protection. Even if a passenger become disruptive during a trip and a driver becomes concerned, that driver must safeguard not only other passengers, but also the disruptive passenger by way of calling for help and stopping in a safe location. There have been several incidences where bus drivers have pulled over to the side of a highway and thrown a passeger off without providing that passenger any protection. As a result those passengers have been struck by other vehicles driving down the road and severly injured. Remember as a paying customer, you have every right to expect your Common Carrier will protect you and make sure you are safe while you are their passenger.
