As Ohio slips into winter’s icy grasp again, it is important to remind drivers to take every precaution to prevent a motor vehicle collision. Regardless of the numerous safety features in today’s vehicles, there is no substitute for preparing your car for winter.

Proper vehicle maintenance and preparedness for winter travel can go a long way toward safe driving. Winterize your vehicle and follow the suggested manufacturer maintenance schedule. Check the wipers, tires, lights, and fluid levels regularly. Make sure the brakes and transmission are working properly, and check tires for tread.

Once your car is winterized, remember that wintery conditions require safer driving habits. Leave early to avoid rushing to a destination. If roads are wet or snowy, allow for extra distance between vehicles. Minimize cell phone use and other distractions…an attentive driver is a safe driver!

When conditions are really bad, don’t go out unless you have to. If you do have to travel in rough weather, the Ohio State Patrol has road condition information to help plan the safest route to your destination.
