The treatment given to many of the homeowners whose lives were devastated by Hurricane Katrina, by the Insurance Industry has hit close to home with one Senator. Senator Trent Lott, who lost his home in Mississippi during Katrina, indicated that he was angered by the Insurane Industry’s “insensitivity and outright meanness” in rejecting many homeowners’ claims arising out of Katrina.

The conduct of many of the insurance companies who have denied policy holders coverage for their losses has resulted in a number of lawsuits, includfing a lawsuit filed by Senator Lott. Senator Lott has also begun to look into drafting legislation which would better protect policy holders from the “subterfuges” many policies contain such that policy holders cannot understand their own policy language. Consumers should carefully review their insurance policies and challenge their insurance company if denied coverage. If you believe you are being misled by your insurance company-fight back.
