While it is too early to determine the full extent of the problem some lettuce growers have voluntarily recalled their lettuce. The recent contamination issues have generated debate as to the need of further regulatory oversight over the United States food supply.

Illness from food contamination has been in the news frequently over the last few years, whether it is produce contamination from e coli or mad cow disease affecting the nations beef supply or saminella developing due to lack of sterile conditions in some restaurants.
