Nursing homes are expected to provide their residents with quality care, yet many fall short of our expectations. According to a study conducted by USA Today, abuse and neglect are all too common in many of today’s nursing homes.
A total of 15 nursing home facilities throughout Northeast Ohio were reviewed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services as having consistently poor ratings. Three Cleveland nursing homes were revealed on the list. You can read the entire survey by checking the nursing home information links below.
How Nursing Homes Were Rated
Nursing homes were analyzed based on a number of factors, such as:
- Number of reported incidents of resident abuse
- Cleanliness of facility and equipment
- Licensed staff
- Level of quality care provided to residents
In 2008, a five star rating system of nursing homes was introduced to aid with a federal effort to increase transparency of consumer health care. Typically, nursing homes with low scale ratings are those staffed with caregivers who neglect providing proper care.
Single-Site Nursing Homes Versus “Chains”: Is There a Quality Difference?
The survey also revealed that chain-owned nursing homes failed to meet expectations as much as independent operations. A nationwide chain received one star ratings consistently for 22 of its 277 operations while none of its operations received consistent five-star ratings.
Nursing Home Conditions are Improving Overall
A trend in overall quality in almost all of the nursing homes monitored in the USA Today survey suggests that not all hope is lost. Nursing homes with higher ratings have increased by 5% over a three year period. The number of poorly rated nursing homes, with one or two star ratings, dropped from 40% to 35% in the same three year period. In the end, people need to research facilities through these types of objective measures rather than solely relying on sales talk from the potential nursing home.
