The often tragic consequences of motorcycle accidents are well-documented, but, sadly, they continue. A 59-year-old Ohio woman was killed last month when she veered left of center and hit an oncoming pickup truck, according to WSAZ NewsChannel 3.
Since such accidents are not rare and motorcyclists are getting in one last ride before Northeast Ohio turns chilly and rainy, we thought we’d share a few of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s safety tips:
- When riding a motorcycle, always wear at least a Department of Transportation-approved helmet. (To learn about the difference between DOT- and Snell Memorial Foundation-approved helmets, click here.)
- Riding under the influence is no safer than driving under the influence. Don’t operate a motorcycle after drinking.
- Wear protective clothing with standout colors and/or reflective strips.
- Be cautious: avoid tailgating and speeding, and use extra care when driving on slick or unpaved surfaces.
Over 4,500 people died from motorcycle crashes in 2010, according to the CDC website. That number skyrocketed 55 percent since 2000.
Whatever vehicle you are operating, keep in mind that it isn't only your life but the lives of others that may be at risk. Drive – and ride – safely!
