Defective stroller more dangerous than the vacuum in Mr. Mom

Comments Off

Think twice before strapping your precious bundle of joy in his or her Kolcraft Contours Options stroller. Kolcraft Enterprises recently recalled 36,000 strollers because both children and adults have gotten their fingers caught in a hinge mechanism. Three children suffered fingertip amputations and two adults smashed their fingers in the defective product.

If you have one of the following strollers, stop using it immediately and contact the manufacturer at 800-453-7673 between 8 a.m. and 6:45 p.m. Monday through Thursday and until 3:30 on Friday. Kolcraft will send you a free repair kit.

The recall affects Contours Options three- and four-wheeled strollers sold at Amazon.com, Target, and ToysRUs, among others, between the years 2006 and 2012. Model numbers begin with:

  • ZL002*
  • ZL005**
  • ZL008**
  • ZL015**
  • ZL018**

* For the ZL002 model, you’ll find the number and date of manufacture printed on a sticker above the left wheel.

** On the others, the model number and date of manufacture are printed on a label sewn into the edge of back of the stroller seat pad.

Stroller shopping can be a hassle, since there are so many options. If you’re a first-time mom, recalls like this can leave you even more frustrated. Here are, we hope, some helpful tips to follow while stroller shopping:

  • Focus on safety
  • Test strollers prior to purchasing, some stores keep models out to test drive
  • Pay attention to detail, including handle adjustments, accessories, and lock features
  • Consider your child’s age. Newborns require more support than older children
  • Look at multiple strollers to suit you and your child’s needs
  • Check the stroller manufacturer’s certification
  • Do research by checking ratings and product reviews
  • Review the warranty policy
